The Gist:

  • Everyone has a furnace in their house, as it’s the primary method of heating in Canada. What do you do when your house is getting no heat?

  • Most people will notice that their furnace isn’t working either first thing in the morning or when they get home from work. With 24 hour service calls, Ignite Heating and Air Conditioning can set up a same-day inspection to get your heat back on.

  • Furnaces don’t break simply because the weather gets cold. It’s usually the furnace running more often in the winter that shows a problem that has already been there.

    • The precursors to there being a problem that you may notice are the sounds of bumps, squeaks, or a burning smell coming from the furnace after you turn it on.

    • If you’ve been away from home for a few days, stand by the furnace for about 10 minutes as it’s starting up as that’s when you will likely hear a noise is something isn’t working correctly.

  • If you end up in a situation where you don’t have any heat:

    • Bump the furnace up and go stand by it for 10 minutes to see if you hear any strange noises or smell any burning. If you do, you have two options depending on your level of handiness:

      • A. Call the 24 hour Service Line and set up a time for a technician to come out and take a look. Do not fiddle around inside the furnace or turn it off, as it may erase any error codes it has gotten. Think of it like taking your car into a shop because you hear it making strange noises, but when the mechanic takes it for a test drive they don’t hear anything.

      • B. If you are a handy person, go to the sight glass on the furnace and record the flashing lights with your phone. if you can see a pattern in the flashing lights, it’s likely an error code.

        • You can then find the error code map inside the furnace and identify which code it is. Call the service line and tell them the code, and if it’s something minor they may be able to help you over the phone and save you some money. If it is something more serious, go ahead and schedule a time for them to come check it out.

  • When building a new home:

    • Ask about the mechanical upgrades. After the home is built it’s all hidden behind a wall, so you want to know what’s going on before the drywall goes up.

    • If the budget comes down to picking between the best countertops or the best mechanical, always go with the mechanical. Countertops will likely be swapped out in 10 years anyways, but mechanical is there for the lifetime of the house.

  • Equipment:

    • Ignite Heating and Air Conditioning sells the Napoleon brand, which is high quality and long lasting equipment. They are located in Ontario, and are the closest shop-local friendly option possible.

    • With most people working form home, now would be a good time to look into an air purification add-on to your furnace. Napoleon offers a UV air purifier which runs whenever the furnace motor does, and kills any bacteria floating around in the air. The best part is you don’t even need a Napoleon furnace to get this add-on!

  • Be Pro-Active: The best time to call an HVAC company for furnace or air conditioning maintenance is MARCH.

    • Your furnace has been put through its paces throughout the winter so any problems that may be starting to come out can be dealt with early, before the air-conditioning rush starts in May. You can also get a free quote on air-conditioning installation while they’re there, so it’s super convenient.

  • If you book a furnace inspection with Ignite Heating and Air Conditioning, they will give you 4 free 1-inch air filters, or 1 upgraded filter is you use those!
