The Gist:

Many people have been doing renovations to their homes over the past year and a half as they adjust to living in their homes rather than out of them, such as creating office spaces, gyms, etc.

  • Home gyms have been huge, and you definitely have some options when it comes to flooring. These rubber flooring styles are portable, easy to put in yourself, and just click together like puzzle pieces.

  • As for home offices, some varieties of vinyl plank flooring have cork undersides that are great for sound-dampening!

Hardwood refinishing has also been popular as our floors have gotten more wear since the world shut down.

  • However, this begs the questions — Do we take on the cost of doing a full hardwood refinish, or do we put vinyl plank over top of the hardwood?

  • The benefit of putting the vinyl over the hardwood is that it is not permanent — in the future, if you want to expose the hardwood again, it is easy to take off and maybe put it in a different room.

  • You can also remove single planks and replace them if they’re damaged.

  • For people intending to rent out their spaces, a renter wants the feeling of spaciousness, and cut lines from different types of flooring through different spaces takes away from that feeling. It is quite easy to put vinyl right from the front door to the back door, and as a bonus it is flood proof and requires minimal floor prep.

The place that takes the most wear is the stairs…

  • Think about how often the stairs are used in your home. It is the only passage way up and down between floors, so already there is wear from just foot traffic. But then take into account dragging vacuums and laundry baskets up and down the stairs…

  • If you have carpet, he underpad starts to flatten out, the carpet takes on staining, etc.

  • If you have hardwood, there are noticeable dings and scratches all over the place.

  • Redoing a full flight of stairs with a hard surface such as vinyl or hardwood is quite the investment — somewhere in the range of $4-5k.

  • Absolute Hardwood Flooring is able to harvest carpet from a different room, maybe the basement or a bedroom, and use that for the stairs. Then it is cheaper to do the flooring of that room with vinyl plank!

Recycling Carpet

  • Absolute Hardwood Flooring believes in reusing and recycling, so if you want the carpet taken out all together, rest assured it’s not just going to a landfill!

  • They will actually give it to the industrial pipeline business in Edmonton to use as protection for pipes during shipping!
