The Gist:

On average most people live in their homes for an average of 5 years. There might be a bunch of reasons why some people move that are out of their control, such as a job transfer, moving back towards family, etc.

When everything is in your control, how do you choose?

  • If you are in the age range where you could consider downsizing, you can measure how much work you currently do in order to live where you do. If you’re cleaning a third bathroom more than anyone is using it or if you’re maintaining a yard more than you get to enjoy it, maybe it’s time to downsize.

  • Many families are looking towards upgrading, which is the opposite of measuring if you should downsize. How can you get the most juice per squeeze on your next transaction?

  • A comfortable upgrade is about $100,000, which will generally handle the majority of your needs that your current home is failing to give you.

  • If you’re working from home, you may not care as much about location as much as you would about characteristics.

If I sell, will I get enough to fund the downpayment on your next home?

  • If the market can get you the right amount, then you should move!
