The Gist:

Not being able to find The One is a common problem that people come to us with. We have heard people shopping for the right house for anywhere between 6 months, a year, and even 8 years.

  • You may feel that houses are expensive, so if you can’t get exactly what you want, what’s the point in even going to see any if you can’t find it online?

  • The key is that “exactly what you want” has to have some sort of scale.

  • For example, let’s assume that your spouse is “the one” for you. How much of “the one” that has so much significance in your life could you have predicted beforehand? Do they have any added benefits or skills you didn’t know was going to come along with them, like being handy or maybe coming from a wealthy family?

  • They may be right for you, but it’s unlikely that you had predicted all the ways in which they are the one for you before your relationship began.

So, what does this mean in regards to not being able to find the right house?

  • Honestly, it means you’re not dating enough! And by that we mean viewing houses. Most people normally only walk through the homes of their friends and family, and over the past almost 2 years it’s been even less than that.

  • How would you possible know which house would be the best for you unless you try a few of them on? Going to see houses that you can buy may show you how the available properties solve problems you may be experiencing that is causing you to want to move.

There is another possibility — The house doesn’t exist.

  • This actually happens more than you might think— in fact, almost all of the hundreds of buyers that we work with didn’t buy a house they had imagined before they started looking.

  • This could be a fear of yours. You think that the people that come to market and don’t get the house they imagine just don’t get what they want. They seem to settle, right?

  • That could be. It could be the reason they want to move is because they have to eat dinner later, so they can’t eat together because of mom’s commute to work. Two of the kids have to share a room, and they have to park their cars outside because bicycles take up a huge part of the garage.

  • After looking at the properties available in their budget, they bought a property that doesn’t have a larger garage, so one vehicle will still be outside. However, mom saves an hour each day on commute, which is 20 hours per month, and the kids don’t need to share a room.

  • There are some people that would say that this family settled and they should have kept looking. However, each week they are the benefit of the plan that works, instead of settling for no change week after week waiting for the perfect plan.

The idea is to make an informed decision. What you really want to know is how often the properties that you would like to buy appear in the neighbourhoods that you would want to live in at the price you would pay.

  • The reason most people don’t know this is because the public house search tools don’t allow you to search into the past. They only show you houses for sale right now. We could easily show you the answer to this on our pro tools!

Whatever the answer may be, it’s an answer.

  • It could be that they do appear, just not in your price range.

  • It could be that they don’t appear there, but do appear in another part of the city you haven’t considered.

  • It could be that they don’t exist. Knowing this will save you from waiting for a bus that never shows up.
